It encompasses photographs of the couple before marriage (for announcements, portrait displays, or thank you cards) as well as coverage of the wedding and reception (sometimes referred to as the wedding breakfast in non-US countries). It is a major commercial endeavor that supports the bulk of the efforts for many photography studios or independent photographers.
You can talk to your photographer about your likes and dislikes and they can get an idea of how you work with the camera, and how subtle or intrusive they should be on your wedding day.
You can have some beautiful and natural images taken of you and your fiance looking like yourselves rather than like a bride and groom.
